The Significance of Mitosis

a. Mitosis replace dead cells.
b. It allows damaged cells to be repaired, replaced or even regenerate, for example; liver cells can regenerate themselves following an injury through the process of mitosis to replace the damaged cells.
c. For asexual reproduction in unicellular organisms such as Amoeba sp.
d. It increases the number of cells in all living organisms, thus allowing growth and development in multicellular organisms.
e. It results in the formation of two daughter nuclei which are genetically identical to each other and to the parent nucleus. Each nucleus contains the same number of chromosomes and the same genetic material as the parent cell.

Chromosomes and chromosomal number.

a.The cells in a sexually reproducing organism can be divided into:
- somatic cells
- reproductive cells or gametes
b. Somatic cells comprise all the cells in an organism, except for the reproductive cells.
c. Somatic cells are formed through mitosis.
d. Reproductive cells are formed through meiosis.
e. Every cell has thread-like structures in its nucleus called chromosomes.
f. The number of chromosomes present in the cells of each species of an individual organisms is constant. This number is referred to as the chromosomal number of the spesies.
